Nov 29:  Electric Phone Scams

HK Electric writes:

"In light of a number of bogus calls received by some of our customers, either through pre-recorded phone messages or in person, about outstanding electricity charges/problems with their electricity supply and disconnection within two hours, HK Electric would like to advise our customers that we do contact customers via pre-recorded phone messages for any payment issue.

Please be alert and do not disclose any personal information to unknown parties. Contact the police for assistance if necessary. Details of all payment methods are listed on our website [and below] and printed at the back of the electricity bill. For enquiries, please call us at 2887 3411."

One more scam tries to convince customers to use mobile phone apps to collect electricity tariff payments. There's no such app yet! They have only non-money-collecting apps, like this one:

HK Electric writes:

"...the company has not authorised or commissioned any firms to develop mobile phone apps to collect electricity tariff payments from customers.

HK Electric offers a wide variety of e-payment options to customers - auto pay, PPS, internet payment and automatic teller machine. Customers can also settle payment by visiting HK Electric's Customer Centre, post offices, counters of The Bank of East Asia or convenience stores (7-Eleven, Circle K, VanGo and CRVanguard), or by using cheque deposit machines at HSBC or Bank of China Hong Kong. In addition, payment can be made by mailing a cheque to G. P. O Box 6600 Hong Kong."

See who Lamma-Por & I came across as a big surprise at the HK International Jewelry Manufacturers' Show in the HK CEC today, solely representing Lamma at this massive show?

Udo & Amber of YSW Main Street's Lamma Amber Shop!

So this cheerful couple of longtime friends are the ONLY ones at this entire show getting free publicity and exposure in the Lamma-zine!   ;~}

Nov 26:  Blue Cats & Disco Fog

Marckq Schmidt‎ of the Lamma Mad Circus NYE Festival 2015 writes:

"Interesting product description on our smoke machine liquid. Oh yeah, did we mention we bought a smoke machine?"

Can't wait to attend this new NY Eve festival to experience the new fog machine in action, a Lamma first?

But first Nick the Bookman and I have to survive Clockenflap this entire weekend, fulfilling our "media" duties while enjoying ourselves! Review and photos coming next week (We hope we'll remember the details)...

P.S. But what are "UK hales", I wonder??

P.S. II  Poster just received! But where did they find this recent picture of Lamma-Por & friend, I wonder???

Nov 25:  Going Deep Inside Lamma Sunset

One of my most popular sunset photos so far was this one on the right, from Nov 19. I couldn't resist playing with it, using multiple levels of inceptions into this image with Google's Deep Dream Generator. I was trying to find out what their pattern recognition/artificial intelligence programs might find INSIDE this image?

Results so far with four different methods, zooming in several times. For full-size images, click'em!

Neuron, Deep Inception

Valyrian, Deep Inception

Spirits, Deep Inception

Default, Deep Inception

Do any of these look better or more intriguing than the original sunset? No?

Well, anyway, here are a few more recent Public Deep Dreams from all over the Interweb, including mine.

Granny Chan - an incredible, inspiring and loving person. RIP.

After linking it from the Residents Facebook Group, within half a day:

P.S. One day later, 300+ Likes and 110 Comments on the obituaries. Granny Chan was a very popular, beloved lady. RIP.

Nov 17:  Lamma Lunatic Asylum

Even private Wifi networks are a little bit different on Lamma...

I remember a time when most of them were open and unsecured, free for everybody in the vicinity.

Instead of using boring network names we try to be a bit more creative:

These "Reasons for Admission" might seem a bit outdated, but many of them still apply nowadays! And there are no gates, gatekeepers or straitjackets in our Lunatic Asylum. We call it simply "Main Street".

On weekends and public holidays we're receiving a huge influx of "temporary inmates", err, esteemed visitors...

There goes another morning in my home office, plus much of last night, but these graphics capture the Fun Day spirit pretty well, I think!

Nov 11:  ANZAC/Remembrance Day @ Island Bar

Sharon of The Island Bar writes:

"Hong Kong, 11 November 2015 – On this very special Wednesday, the 11th day of the 11th month, The Island Bar on Lamma Island hosted a Remembrance Day event in the evening, during which John Stuart presented a documentary video he had personally produced and directed, entitled 'Coming Home', an exploration of the Gallipoli campaign in the First World War.

'Coming Home' was a labour of love and a personal journey for John, dedicated to those brave Australians and New Zealanders who gave their lives in a foreign land. They were supporting Great Britain, a nation far away but part of their heritage.

Unprepared for what was to come and faced by an imposing topography and a resolute foe, the ANZACs bravely and resolutely entered the fray time and again. The Turkish commander on the ground was Kemal Atatürk who demanded absolute sacrifice, telling his own troops: "I do not order you to attack, I order you to die."

Among the many on both sides who died were Medical students from Istanbul University, the Class of 1915, all of them. In the Turkish counterattack after the landings, "there were ten thousand casualties in an area little more than a sports field." Such was the power and passion of the Turkish response, with this seemingly simple phrase in the commentary speaking volumes about the enormity and scale of the carnage in this fateful military campaign.

The evening commenced with customers joining in on their way home from work, aware that the session was to be in commemoration of those who had died on the battlefield and awaiting the presentation. A few minutes before 7:00pm, 11:00 am in the UK, the acoustics tested and the video ready to roll, John introduced his project and the reasons for it, and spoke of his passion to learn more about what had caused so many of his countrymen to enlist and to give their lives.

Dan Peterson, Licensee, requested two minutes of silence at 7:00pm (11:00am GMT) in respect and remembrance of all who had dedicated their lives in the two World Wars and other conflicts, tolling the bar bell 11 times upon completion of these few moments of quiet reflection.

The documentary ran for one hour. It was a rare hour of near complete silence among the patrons of The Island Bar as the customers and their families focused on the screen, captivated by the story as it unfolded. It could perhaps be described as a sobering experience, for the fully absorbed and contemplative audience in the pub.

Even those who had been involved in the making of the film were drawn once again into the moving tale, some seeing it in its near final form for the first time.

Living on Lamma Island, and as an avid paddling enthusiast, John had enlisted the help of some of his teammates who had willingly helped finesse the film with voice-overs and other contributions.

John intends to polish this version, refine a few areas, tighten it up and perhaps reduce it by a few minutes, without sacrificing the major elements. Ultimately, he plans to donate it to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra."

Nov 8:  Tonight, For Free

138 Likes and 5 Shares so far, even though my photos were only posted on my Lamma Gung Facebook page so far. Lammaites adore free sunsets!

All photos shot with a pocket zoom lens camera, Wifi-controlled from my smartphone. I bought it cheaply, 2nd-hand in the Lamma Bilingual Classfieds I co-moderate ("Buy & Sell, Rent & Let").

I couldn't find a used camera yet in the new Buy Nothing Lamma Island closed (spam-free) Facebook group ("Give. Share. Build Community"). This is a fantastic new resource for local, FREE goods and services!

Here's a little free promotion, like I love to do for (almost) all local community events and services that come to my attention. Email me!

"DESCRIPTION:

Nov 7:  My Way to Fun Day

Like (almost) every year since 2001, I set out around noon for the Lamma Fun Day on Power Station Beach today. I decided to walk this time, taking the scenic route, all the way from Pak Kok Village in the North of Lamma.

I got distracted by all the natural beauty and friends I met on the way, mostly going to/coming from the Fun Day. I shot a few phiotos and it took me a LONG time to arrive at the beach. Lots of great photos were taken (and published on Facebook) of the people, booths, activities and the musicians at the Fun Day, many of them much better than mine. So let me concentrate this time on my way TO the Fun Day instead of pictures AT the Fun Day.

A Praying Mantis in the middle of the path, so well camouflaged I almost stepped on it. ~ 3 of the 4 big, aggressive dogs barking at everybody walking by, guarding the house below the bridge on coastal path to Pak Kok.

New foster coming home to SheiLAP and her helper ~
An insect trail going up most of this tree

Flowers turning into fruits ~ Wild blooms above the beach

Tannery Beach, including the razed forest on the right side,
probably making space for new village house(s)?

Finally made it to the Fun Day...

More of my photos...

Riding my mountain bike back home, I was glad that the drink driving laws don't seem enforced much at night on Lamma... That generous drinks hut at the beach is dangerous!  ;~)

My elbow has healed well, after 3 Tetanus shots in the Lamma Clinic, after slicing it open while riding up Heart Attack Hill earlier this year; I was all sober back then (as I usually am!)

Well, the next temptation, Clockenflap, is coming up. Nick the Bookman & I'll be freeloading, err, reviewing & photographing as "accredited media" again.

P.S. Nov 10: Fun(draising) Day results: $216,892.40!

The auction raised most money, closely followed by the bar!
