One entire week without new
Lamma-zine stories! What have I
been up to while you were
enduring the 2nd typhoon in just
a few days?
Hatching down in the
Orthopedics ward of Queen Mary
Hospital with a serious lower
leg infection, that's what. Typhoon outside?
I didn't even notice, under
quasi-quarantine.
Everybody in hospital, staff and
patients is Covid-tested and
most are fully vaccinated. It took a
few hours of waiting for my first-ever Covid-19 saliva-only test
to come back negative before
even being admitted into the
ward. "Happy to inform you that
you're negative!" No visitors at
all the first week and then just
1 person at the same time. Food
or stuff deliveries from the
outside, only 10-11am daily.
Putting on a temporary valve on the
back of my hand, being pumped
full of antibiotics 3 times/day,
fortunately not a drip.
Despite interviewing me at
admission about my "dietary
habits", my first meal turned
out to be Vegetarian,
salt-free, low-calorie and
half-size! Their internal
records referenced a former
hospital stay when I was almost
twice as heavy.
5 days of
oatmeal, congee, identical
lunches and dinners with potato
mash and boiled veggie. But it's
wonders for losing weight,
losing several pounds in one week!
This was my hospital
discharge slip. So glad that
they circled the right option!
They could have told me,
"The only two ways you're
getting out of here, either
you're dead or healed!"
But the last two times as a
seriously ill
in-patient they sent me home
after a week of tests, without
any diagnosis, treatment or
medication. So there should be
at least one more option on the
discharge notice:
"We have no idea what's wrong
with you and how to treat it.
Let's hope you'll get better by
yourself in a few weeks or
months, or never. Come back only
if it gets much worse."
I was lucky and after a few
months the serious symptoms
mostly disappeared by
themselves, without any
treatment or medication, just
their prescribed multivitamins.
So what was the first thing I
endeavoured on after my return?
Almost one full week of not
being able to indulge in my
digital creations! See below,
today's output:
Oct 9:
T8 typhoon Signal just went up
at 6:40am this morning, so no
more ferries from/to Lamma and
all over HK. Most ferries still
run in T1 and T3, but at T8 it
all stops.
Some bars in YSW will be busy
today, no swarms of tourists
descending today Saturday; the
locals enjoying their typhoon
parties in the bars or at home.
Except the "Lamma Bored Riders"
hurrying to some of our beaches
to indulge in surfing. The waves
rarely get high enough in HK on
normal days, changing them today
from usually Bored to Board
Riders.
Oct 8:
"HK Electric welcomes the
announcement today by the Chief
Executive that Hong Kong will
adopt "net-zero carbon emissions
for electricity generation".
Strategies to cease coal-fired
power generation by 2035 and
substantially increase renewable
energy applications have been
set out to achieve carbon
neutrality before 2050.
A spokesman for HK Electric
pledged the Company's full
support for the proposed
strategies and looked forward to
the "The Hong Kong Climate
Action Plan 2050", to be
announced shortly by the
Environment Bureau. "HK Electric
would engage with the Government
on the best way forward to
decarbonise. We will also
maintain close dialogues with
our stakeholders to promote the
sustainable development of Hong
Kong", the spokesman said.
The spokesman pointed out
that HK Electric has been
pursuing various decarbonisation
initiatives, including replacing
coal-fired generating units with
gas-fired generating units and
renewable energy. Last year,
about 50% of the electricity
output came from gas-fired
generation, resulting in a 25%
drop in carbon emissions
compared with the 2005 base
year. With more gas-fired units
coming on stream, the entire
coal-fired power generation
fleet would be phased out by the
mid-2030s.
The spokesman added that the
company has been moving full
steam ahead with the development
of local renewable energy.
Besides introducing the Feed-in
Tariff scheme for customers, HK
Electric has plans to build a
large-scale offshore wind farm
in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the
Company remains open-minded
about innovative generation
solutions and closely keeps
track of new energy development,
including green hydrogen
energy."
