Green Lamma Green
Lamma Island is one of the most popular tourist spots in
Hong Kong because it combines picturesque and tranquil natural sceneries with gourmet
seafood restaurants. The walk along the family trail from Yung Shue Wan to Picnic
Bay is enjoyed by Hong Kong residents and tourists alike. The trail itself, however, is exposed to
direct sunlight as there are more shrubs than trees along it for providing
shade, which severely hampers enjoyment of the walk on hot, cloudless days.
Walking in the countryside has become increasingly popular as evidenced by the boom of books on natural environment. The appetite of the walkers has been honed: they are not satisfied with merely appreciating the sceneries, they want to be informed.
To upgrade the family trail on Lamma to a quality walk, The Conservancy Association and Hongkong Electric Company Ltd propose a 3-year plan to turn the trail into a shaded “ecological corridor.” The walk will not only be a more enjoyable experience on the completion of the project, as an added value, the walk will also be an informative one.
1. To make the walk along the trail more comfortable by providing shades through planting trees at selected areas along the trail;
2. To educate the public by turning the trail into a green walk through tagging ID labels and green messages on trees;
3. To facilitate good community relations and strengthen a sense of belonging among the local residents;
4. To involve the participation of the public through organizing tree planting days.
5. To demonstrate a good example of Public Private Partnership Programme in Hong Kong society;
6. To facilitate the development of sustainable development in Lamma Island.
1. Green Lamma Green, a three-year project aims to improve the family trail and promote the eco-tourism on Lamma Island. The first year involves preparatory works and kick off ceremony cum tree planting day. Suitable planting site will be selected base on the soil richness and convenience. 1500 local and exotic tree species will be pant, mainly are local species, with some ethnobotanical values species, such as Aquilaria sinensis (牙香樹), Bridelia tomentosa (土密樹), Cleistocalyx operculata (水翁), etc. Over 150 students, parents and the general public form various districts are invited to join the planting event. Relevant organizations and government departments are invited to support the programme. Schools will be involved in monitoring processes, to increase the public involvement. School talks on woodland conservation and sustainable development will be delivered by CA for those schools. Visits will be conducted for students to appreciate the landscape and ecological values of Lamma Island. Survey on local residents and tourists will be conducted, to collect information for further developing the sustainable development project for Lamma Island.
2. The second year will plant 500 trees along the trial as well as the continuous works of tree caring and development of the green educational trail. The soliciting works will be continued. A tree caring day will be organized and about 200 volunteers will be recruited. The Association will contact parties interested in the establishment of the green trail. ID labels will be attached to the trees to facilitate appreciation. Establishment of the green trail will be announced, a leaflet introducing the upgraded trail as well as other unique characteristics of Lamma will be published.
3.
The third and last year involves works of handing over
the green trail to the Government. A handover cum closing ceremony will be organized.
A guided tour of the upgraded trail will be held on two days, one of which will
be concurrent with the ceremony. We will train a group of “green interpreters”
as the guides of the tour. The event is free of charge and participants can get
a map of the trail. Tree caring and watering event will be organized for the
schools for consecutive years, to appreciate the landscape and ecological
values of Lamma Island. 500 reports on “Green Lamma Green” which include the
survey data will be published and distribute to press and related parties.
