Snakes... Aiyaaah!
Snakes, an always-popular topic
on Lamma! A longtime entry our
list of
Top Ten Ways to Die on Lamma,
it's a major reason of why HK
people are NOT moving to nearby Lamma
Island in droves, despite the
oh-so-many
positives.
I haven't
encountered any snakes
personally in years, but I'm not
hiking at night anymore when
they're most active. But many Lammaites
have spotted them recently and numerous photos
and stories have been posted
in the
Lamma Snakes FB
group and in this
Lamma-zine.

Beachgoers, Bookworms &
Bohemians?
"The island of Lamma lies
less than 30 minutes by ferry
from Central and is known for
its chill vibes, hipster
community and perhaps even the
presence of sea turtles.
Devoid of chain stores and
vehicles, there are two main
communities on either side of
the island: Yung Shue Wan, known
for its beaches, bars and
bakeries; and sleepy Sok Kwu
Wan, a fishing village with
seafood restaurants aplenty."

detailed, mostly correct and
almost up-to-date travel guide,

These imaginative scenarios from

powers-that-be won't see them
and be inspired to realise some
of these scenarios:

Graduation Certificate
Too much hiking/biking on
Lamma's hills, my knees have
suffered some detioriation and
pain. It's my first certificate
in many years: physio class for
knee osteoarthritis, with
personal assessment &
instructions, Powerpoints,
videos, in English, all very
professional and free in the
public healthcare system!
Should I frame this certificate
and display it proudly on a
wall?

Lamma Calendar 2025?
Is the
Lamma Calendar 2025 in
planning, I hope? Pre-pandemic,
it was usually around this time
that the calendar volunteers
started calling for photos to be
featured in next year's Lamma
Calendar.
To be sold at the next
Lamma Fun
Day and in YSW shops afterwards.
Sat, Nov 16, '24 will be the
21st Lamma Fun Day! They've been
raising funds for the
Child Welfare Scheme's
projects in Nepal since 2000.
See
some of my former potential
Calendar entries below. I was lucky
enough to have some of my photos
featured in the Lamma Calendar a
few times.
There must be loads of great
photos from Lammaites since the
last Lamma Calendar! If it
happens again this year, I'll
sponsor and heavily promote it
in this Lamma-zine, like every
year before.

Lantern, Some Assembly Required

The day following the Chinese
Mid-Autumn Festival
(official holiday's name!), I
finally got around to assembling
the flatpacked Mid-Autumn
lantern we received 2 days ago
from the YSW Rural Committee,
together with the 2 free

It was quite a manual-dexterity,
3D-paper-folding challenge for a
computer nerd, especially the
electric-light insert, with only
these tiny, Chin.-only
instructions:

Steve Cray
I am very sad to hear of the
passing of many of our friend
and Lamma celebrity Steve
Cray. The Red Star has
Risen (his famous band Red
Star Rising); we will miss
you.
So many memories by
current and former Lammaites!
Rest in Peace!
This is how I'll personally
remember Steve as The
Electrifying Performer, Mr.
October of my
LammaCelebrityCam
2008 calendar, based on photos I
took at Lamma Fun Day where he
performed.
Steve's gigs with his band,
photo stories in the SCMP and
other news outlets, photos of
him and by him have been
featured quite often in the
Lamma-zine over the last 22
years. My favourite story:
Lamma-zine Mar 1, 2007:
Congrats to Award-Winning
Prof Red Star:
Lamma's Photojournalist, Rock
God and Biblical Scholar, Prof
Red Star, has won the best
science news reporting award in
the annual Hong Kong News
Awards. The SCMP wrote:
"Steve Cray won the best science
news reporting award for his
series on British physicist
Stephen Hawking. He also
received an honourable mention
for another science story...."
