Remembering 'People of Lamma'
This fascinating, amazing,
independent, unique community
project ended just 3 years ago.
Click above for their Facebook
Page to learn about some very
interesting Lammaites.
They described the
project:
"Welcome to 'The People of Lamma
Island'. This page was set up
amid COVID-19 as interactions
and social gatherings have been
diminished and regulated to curb
the outbreak.
Human connection is the
lifeblood of Lamma, those who
inhabit this island come from
all walks of life, with
colourful backgrounds and a
wealth of stories. We wanted to
keep this connection going in
these difficult times and allow
residents to get to know one
another in a different light.
In the coming weeks, we will be
sharing the pieces dedicated to
The People of Lamma Island. If
you would like to get involved
in the project, please get in
touch!"

Occupational Safety & Health @
Powerstation
In the Lamma Power Station's
Generation Division, there is a
class of Intelligent Safety
Masters who are using technology
to eliminate occupational safety
and health risks on construction
sites.
They are HK Electric's
Engineering and Construction
Division staff, who will promote
the Smart Site Safety system,
the first to use it in the
foundation work of the L13
natural gas generating unit
currently under construction.
Working with the contractor,
the staff has set up a
centralized control and
management platform for the
project.
This platform uses artificial
intelligence cameras to monitor
site irregularities, machinery
movement, and personal
protective equipment used by
workers in real time, as well as
environmental information,
including noise, wind speed,
temperature, humidity, natural
gas, and dust levels.
The project is one of the first
to be awarded the 'Safe and
Smart Worksite' label by the
Government and the Construction
Industry Council (CIC).

HK Policy Address
The recent yearly
Policy Address 2024 of HK's
Chief Executive mentioned Lamma
Island only 3 times:
"Put forward the development
proposal and model for the
ex‑Lamma Quarry site by
end‑2024, and invite expression
of interest from the market in
Q1 2025."
The
long-running, advanced, detailed
plans to build a new town with 1,900
flats in the ex-Lamma Quarry,
basically doubling Lamma's
population, have been
dropped a few years back.
Check
out the elaborate, now closed,

Ex-Lamma Quarry website.

Green HK Green Launches New
Route
"Nearly 200 participants
join today's
Green Hong Kong Green
Eco-tour day and explore the
nine eco-heritage routes
developed on Hong Kong and and
Lamma Island."
Nature enthusiasts got an
opportunity to tour the new
route today at the first
Eco-tour Day
organised by HK Electric and CA
since the pandemic. Nine, out of
eleven, other routes developed
under GHKG were also open for
public tours today, for a total
of about 200 participants."
"At today's launching
ceremony, HK Electric Managing
Director, Mr. Francis C.Y. Cheng
said HK Electric had been
actively promoting environmental
education:
'Through GHKG, we encourage
citizens to support eco-tourism
and help protect biodiversity to
build a sustainable community.
We are delighted to co-organise
Eco
tour Day
again this year for the public
to enjoy a lovely day out while
learning to appreciate and
safeguard our beautiful home,
Hong Kong,' he said.
Mr. Cheng continued: 'At HK
Electric, we strive to minimise
the environmental impact of our
operations, one of which is
power generation from Lamma
Power Station.
We have discovered migratory
birds wintering at the power
station and found traces of
corals in the nearby waters. In
addition, we have been working
with CA to protect and enhance
the biodiversity of Lamma Island
through tree planting, tree
caring, and regular beach
clean-ups.'
Since
its inception in 2005, GHKG has
developed 12 eco-heritage
routes, encouraging the public
to travel green and live a
low-carbon lifestyle. To date,
the project has attracted over
12,000 participants through its
in-person and online tours.
The

50!
Happy 50th to my oldest
step-daughter!
Just a little bday card, using
my image from 40 years ago, when
Lamma-Poh and I both worked in
IBM (Zurich and HK), starting to
chat on their internal, worldwide
pre-Internet, connecting all IBM
employees, enabling messaging,
email, file transfer, etc.
decades before the public Internet
became widely available in HK in
1995.
I designed the CG image above
specifically for the magazine
cover of IBM HQ in Paris,
drawing inspiration from a
famous photo of an
island in the Seine River.
Additionally, this image proudly
served as the cover for my
inaugural solo exhibition at an
art gallery in central Zurich:
Grafische Computer-Fantasien -
Galerie/Atelier E, Zurich,
Switzerland -
Jun 5-Aug 23, 1986
This cover image got me my
first-ever paid business
trip to IBM HQ in Paris, as just
a summer intern working in the
IBM research lab Zurich (while I
was studying computer science at
uni).
I was earning my living expenses
(free universities in
Switzerland) working some nights
and weekends in the lab,
"babysitting" and
troubleshooting their huge,
airconditioned-room,
multi-million-$ IBM mainframe
computer, plus several full-time
internships during the
university's long summer
holidays.
I had access to this computing
power (pre-PC,
less than
a mobile phone nowadays)
available for my CG experiments,
programming and messaging in the
wide-open, employees-only network, just for fun
while "babysitting".
That's where I met my future
wife online, moving to HK to
visit her almost 37 years ago, finding
an IT manager job easily,
semi-retiring early here on
Lamma. Happy ending!
