Lamma's Manneken Pis

My
favourite view on the way to the
Pak Kok ferry pier! I usually
stop for a few seconds to enjoy
the ever-changing view.
But
what's the little one doing
there at the water's edge?
Zooming in...
Lamma's
Manneken Pis.

Welcome to Planet Lamma

An A3-size poster I designed,
printed and posted on Lamma's
walls to greet Lamma visitors
(planet photo by Aerobots).
More Planet Lamma photos from

P.S. How to
make your own Planet photos?
If you have Photoshop, play
around with
Filter-Distort-Polar Coordinates,
using a panoramic picture
(ideally a 360
degree-wrap-around like the ones
above for a seamless planet).

'Biodiversity Thrives at
Lamma Power Station'

About 30 bird species have been
identified in the bird survey
currently underway at Lamma
Power Station, including
(clockwise from top right):
Red-whiskered Bulbul,
Yellow-browed Warbler, Grey
Heron, Daurian Redstart
and the relatively rare
Brown Shrike (centre).
Press release today, about how
HK
Electric Promotes Conservation
through "Green Hong Kong Green"
Programme
"Despite its small size of 13.85
square kilometres, Lamma Island
hosts about two-thirds of Hong
Kong's recorded biodiversity.
This includes over 100 bird
species, with more than 40%
found at the island's largest
industrial facility - Lamma
Power Station (LPS).

HK Electric Managing Director
Mr. Francis C.Y. Cheng recently
led this year’s first online
tour of the Company’s Green Hong
Kong Green (GHKG) project,
sharing insights on transforming
the power station into a
wildlife haven and urging
citizens to help preserve local
biodiversity.
Mr. Cheng emphasised HK
Electric's commitment to
environmental conservation,
highlighting efforts at LPS to
preserve biodiversity. "Over 40
years, native trees have been
planted, attracting birds, while
new technologies are applied to
minimise operational impacts on
water bodies and marine life,
preventing fish ingress into our
system and supporting coral
growth in nearby waters."
He continued, "Since 2011, HK
Electric has been conducting
bird surveys at LPS every five
to six years. The ‘Bird Survey
Team’ uses binoculars to observe
and listens to bird chirps, to
identify and record bird species
and numbers over a 7-month
period. This helps assess the
relationship between birds and
the environment at the power
plant, guiding measures to
protect and enhance
biodiversity..."
Since 2005, GHKG has developed
12 eco-heritage routes on Hong
Kong Island and Lamma Island.
Through guided tours, the
programme showcases Hong Kong's
ecological and heritage
resources, promoting green
travel, low-carbon living,
environmental awareness and a
positive attitude towards
eco-tourism.
For details, visit the
GHKG App, Facebook page, HK
Electric YouTube channel or
website, CA website, or
call 2728 6781."

I can highly recommend the
Lamma Night Safari tour
which I joined myself a few
years back, taking some of my
favourite wildlife photos.
P.S. Story in the HK
Standard today:
4 bird species spotted at Lamma
Power Station for the first time
"More than 40 percent of over
100 bird species on the outlying
Lamma Island can be found at
Lamma Power Station, according
to HK Electric."

AI @ Power Station

HK Electric staff have
considerable experience in
applying AI. They recently held
an internal workshop to share
their past achievements in
exploring and applying AI.
The conference speaker hopes
that his colleagues will be
sharing ways to improve
performance and efficiency by
using technology and different
AI tools in a variety of areas,
from meeting minutes to customer
service and many more.

Lammaites Enjoy 'Ne Zha 2'

HK Electric supported
Lamma residents for a film
appreciation session of the
amazingly successful "Ne Zha 2"
(US$2+ billion worldwide box office) on
last Saturday (15 Mar).
I loved
this movie, featuring
the most daily showings in a
single multiplex I've ever seen
in a HK cinema (25)!

Elder Visit Volunteers

The
Power Station "Buddies"
in charge of the construction
works, contractors' workers and
staff from the
Hans Andersen Club Lamma Island
Centre visited some
Lamma elderlies at home.
Two events have been arranged so
far this year, including working
with the Hans Andersen Club
charity to help the elderlies
check home electricity safety.
They also brought gifts of
blessing bags, blankets and
necessities.
They'll also organise regular
activities to spread love and
care to Lamma. These
construction site workers are
usually showing their rough and
cool side, so it's great to see
them volunteer and show their
softer, caring side.
If you're interested to join
yourself, respond to this poster
I noticed on the wire fence
opposite the post office, where
you often can find event posters
from the Hans Andersen Club:

Power Station Bird Survey
Green HK Green writes:
"Do
you know how many species of
birds and migratory birds perch
or stop over at the Lamma Power
Station every year? Have you
ever thought that a power
station can be a bird-watching
hotspot and a beautiful
woodland?
HK Electric
is committed to protecting the
ecosystem on Lamma Island and
the surrounding waters and has
conducted a ‘Coral Survey’ in
2023, which has identified a
number of species.
Recently, HEC is also conducting
the 2024-2025 Lamma Power
Station Bird Survey, which has
already yielded a lot of
interesting findings and photos
before it is completed.
On 22 March (this
Saturday),
Francis Cheng,
Managing Director of HEC, will
be the tour guide to share the
preliminary results of the
Lamma Power Station Bird
Survey, the concept of
planting forests in the plant,
and other measures to protect
biodiversity at the
Green Tour of Hong Kong,
an environmental education
programme co-organised by the
Conservancy Association!"

Ken, Director
of The Conservancy Association,
will also share the ‘Ecosystem
Services’ with us in a lively
and interesting way, which is
really a great learning
experience!
You
can also play a prize game to
win prizes! Why don't you
register
right now? The online
tour is open to
everyone, so get your friends
and relatives to join us!"

Chimneys in the Fog
The only constructions peeking
through the almost daily fog
these weeks are the 3 chimneys
of the
HK Electric Power Station.
These are the real Lamma landmarks,
visible from much of Hong Kong,
they're the tallest
constructions on our island,
where few buildings ever exceed
the permitted maximum of 3
floors for village houses.

LAMMA DAY on Apr 20
An amazing line up of bands
played all day and night. I love
that I danced to The Bastards
with my son Christie, who wasn't

rock with Dan back in the 1990's
at the Wanch!
What a magical occasion!"

We've got a new snake charmer in

It's a Jungle Carpet Python

or even build a nest in there?

Gerontechnology?

"University

ambassadors explore some of the
latest gerontechnology products
at the Gerontech and Innovation
Expo cum Summit 2024 on a trip
to Guangzhou."
HK Electric,
recently
teamed up with the Hong Kong
Council of Social Service
(HKCSS) to run a
Smart Power Ambassador Training
Programme 2024/2025.
80+ local retirees (U3A
Ambassadors) were given
opportunities to explore
artificial intelligence and
sustainable development through
a series of dynamic training
sessions.
It included a Greater Bay Area
study tour on gerontechnology
and smart ageing. They visited
the integrated elderly care
facilities in Guangzhou and
explored smart tech for
retirees, such as call bells,
intelligent fall mats, biometric
authentication access system and
emergency inspection windows.
