Wishing Tree, Tai Po Lam Tsuen   (Feb 12, 2005)

It's quite a rare occasion to witness an event that makes TV headlines and the cover pages of the local Chinese & English newspapers, but it happened to us today!  See SCMP story.

A family visit with Lamma-Por's children and their families to the famous Wishing Tree in Tai Po Lam Tsuen resulted in my big photo gallery of this major Lunar New Year event. While dodging falling oranges with tails of lucky paper and hand-written wishes attached, we witnessed the media frenzy after a 25-foot branch of the Wishing Tree had just dropped off due to the sheer weight of the oranges, lightly injuring an old man & a boy. Have a look at my Wishing Tree photo gallery below.

Arriving in style

The Wishing Tree even has its own Temporary Taxi Stand...

...and a Coach Waiting Area...

...and its own website, of course!

No, it's not the *real* Wishing Tree yet, just a double, an apprentice, a backup

Even this backup tree is very busy

Some are REALLY determined to get their wishes to stay up in the tree

An orange tree?

Souvenirs! Souvenirs!

$5 per orange, including the lucky paper tail

Part of the paper tail

Lucky sayings to inspire your wishes

Writing all your wishes onto the paper tail, my step-grandchildren getting excited.

The media are here already, TV cameras, newspaper photogs & 1 web publisher...

Photographers on the prowl

Officials supervising the cleanup operation!

Taking a chainsaw to the fallen Wishing Tree branch

The branch

Incense stick burning for good fortune

Driving away all evil

Playing with fire

The remains of the day

Tree trunk in a protective cage

More heavy loads might bring down more branches soon

Shooting straight up

Sun setting soon

Farewell, Wishing Tree
