Bug season is in full swing on Lamma! So many Colourful Creepy Crawlies are
swarming all over the island, a pleasure for nature lovers with keen eye
sight, patience and an eye for the often tiny and well-hidden details. Most
of the bugs are harmless and non-aggressive, but some of them might bite,
cause itches and rashes. Some of them are amazingly noisy, like the
shrieking cicadas keeping some of us awake these nights.
It's so hot and humid now, up to 100%, the bugs just love it, multiplying
and swarming all over the island. In our almost new village house flat,
we've recently encountered cockroaches, mosquitoes, wasps, winged termites
plus centipedes... and that's with closed windows on 2/F. Plus all the
recent close encounters of Lammaites with a wide variety of snakes (Lamma
Snake Sightings), boar families, fast-growing poisonous spiders,
caterpillars, beetles and whatever else loves our subtropical climate.
The mostly still wild, almost untouched nature around us, outside the
villages, has become a paradise for macro lens artistes like Lamma-zine
"house photographer" Rambler. He's probably the best hobbyist active
on Lamma these days I know of, see above. If you've got better macro shots,
don't hesitate to send them to me to show them off on this site, please!
LamMarathon Man Completes London Marathon - Thank You!
Jack
Wilson writes (with his photos):
"With your great support, I'm happy to report that I successfully
completed the London marathon!
I clocked in at 4 hours 44 minutes 58 seconds, leaving 13,182 runners in
my wake! Admittedly, 22,393 runners pipped me at the post, but who's
counting.
At least I was able to squeak in front of Elmo, Bagpuss, Mickey Mouse,
Big Bird, a man carrying a fridge on his back, two men dressed as a camel
(someone ran a marathon as a camel's bum -- respect!), a dozen rhinos, two
tigers, a clown troupe, a banana, and four Rastafarians from Wolverhampton
who ran while carrying a bobsled.
Thank you again for helping to support Children with Cancer UK. Together
we raised over £2,500. Thank you in particular to Mavis Wollerton, Jo's
grandmother, who raised money in lieu of presents at her 90th birthday
party.
Also, an energetic thanks to the 21 runners who participated in the
LamMarathon fund raising run!"

It
is with great pleasure that I write to tell you about the launch of Coastal
Watch, a government funded project led by WWF. This is a really
positive step forward and I am really pleased to report that the efforts of
Living Lamma, through Brand on the Beach, as well as other groups who have
spent so much effort over the years to clean up Hong Kong and raise
awareness about the problem of marine trash are finally paying off.
Living Lamma joins Ecovision, EcoMarine, The Green Council, Ocean Park and
Plastic Free Seas in supporting this programme and I would be pleased if you
could help us by letting people know about it.
Who can participate?
Coastal Watch is looking for volunteer teams
to take charge of one of 27 areas to undertake a study of the
marine trash and the ecology. Team members should be over 14 and
there will be a training day on 26th and 27th June. Each team
will be allocated a team scientist.
Team scientist are also volunteers, who are studying
environmental science or have some qualifications in that area.
The programme might be of interest to Lammaites who work at the
schools or universities, or who have an interest in marine
protection. Full details are in the
leaflet.
P.S. For everyone else - please help
share the leaflet.
I still love to run & edit this "semi-official" website of
the Lamma community, which has also been recognised by Facebook
and Wikipedia! It took me a little effort to convince them, but
they accepted it last year. It might got something to do with
having no serious competitors, perhaps?

Interesting story in the
GuestRoom
blog, by "NewChinaHand, a new Lamma resident and recently
infrequent contributor":
Lion Rock News:
HK Gov't Insists Lamma 'has no power station'
NewChinaHand, like
many other Lammaites over the years, has come up with a creative
alternate explanations of the *REAL* function of our power
station.
Last time I checked from my rooftop, May 21, here are our 3
iconic chimneys:
Oops, too much wide angle! Zooming in:
Oops again, wrong zoom location! Sorry! Zooming
in again...
Here are the 3 chimneys, barely visible from my rooftop which is
close to the far end of the 1st Cable Road, where the power
cables go under the seabed to feed HK Island's insatiable
appetite for power. A tiny little bit of this awesome amount of
electricity returns to Lamma via another undersea cable after
being transformed down on HK Island to the lower voltage usable
by our village houses.
Few places on Lamma cannot view this 215 metres
tall group of 3 chimneys,
one of two Lamma landmarks. What's the other one? See the header
of this website...
It's our Lamma Winds windturbine, of
course, still the ONLY commercial windturbine in all of HK, I
think. At least till they'll build that sea windfarm of 35
turbines off the SW Lamma coast, increasing Lamma's wind power
output by a factor of about 100.
Should
we be renamed Power Island, including HK's largest solar
panels installation atop and around the coal/gas-fired Power
Station? Our Power Station produces ALL the electrical power for
HK Island! If it ever goes down, despite their amazing 99.999% up-time,
all of HK Island would go dark.
At least till the big brother of
HK's power duopoly, China Light & Power, would kick in with
their backup power, much of which (20+%?) originates in the Main-land's Daya
Bay nuclear power plant.
The GuestRoom's motto, inspiring the
headline of this story, is also one of the few mottos behind 12
years of this Lamma-zine. I hope I got at least some of my facts right in my "superficially
investigated and wildly hypothesised" off-the-cuff remarks in
this story, which is basically just me rambling on after the
simple Lion Rock News link that started this random story. Too
much coffee... again...
My hat, err, Lamma Dragons baseball cap, is off to the GuestRoom. I'll be watching their daily stories closely,
especially the often astounding, weekly photography of
street SNAP, another Lammaite and friend.

Manager Kris messaged me after I asked him about
veggie & pescetarian (fish & seafood only) offerings in YSW's
Prime Bar & Grill for two new friends:
"Vegetarian Nut Roast - made with Ricotta, mix of
several nuts, contains egg. Looks like a meatloaf, but no meat;
very popular, it will become a regular part of the menu.
Vegetarian Pasta with Grilled Zuchini, Carrots,
Capsicum in a Cream Sauce;
you may add prawns to either pasta dish -
Organic Vegetarian Spaghetti with Tomato/basil Sauce -
Fish 'n' Chips -
Pan Seared Salmon - Vegetarian Risotto (may add prawns) -
Prawn Salad - Mediterranean Salad.
And I am experimenting with a
Cheese and Mushroom Lasagna that so far tastes GRRRReat,
happy to serve it to them and get some feedback."

Newbie Robin writes:
"Don't let the name fool you. Prime Bar & Grill is the
perfect place to go if you are craving a hearty vegetarian
entree!
The creamy mushroom risotto was heavenly. Perfectly
cooked, full of flavour and just the right consistency. The
nutloaf is not just for vegetarians! It is not your mother's dry
meatloaf. It is moist and savoury and even has a bit of crunch.
It was served with wonderfully smooth and buttery mashed
potatoes and vegetables sauteed with herbs.
We really enjoyed the moist, chocolatey cake and the creme
brulee came with a crisp crack of sugar on top.
Kris is a friendly
host and the
waitresses were smiling and made sure all our needs were met. We
recommend eating on the back patio where you can watch the
sunset over the water. [Move indoors upstairs if you get
surprised by a windy shower, where you can also enjoy a game of
pool].
Prime offers 3 delicious, but
heavy, desserts. We would like to see a lighter option on the
menu, something fruity and refreshing."

its historical motherland, Russia.
After
all, don't we all here love drinking? And Man Kee serves

The capital of the Lamma People's Republic shall be Lo

contact the Motherland directly).
Miss Yu from the

Meanwhile, our budget will mainly derive revenue from
selling power to our rich neighbours. The official language and

Thanks and enjoy!"

There are so many places on this website featuring
"Living Lamma Legend"
Harry Harrison,

I've been featured in a few of his
cartoons, including my avatar all over this site and on
Facebook,
plus being drawn as a "Lamma Legend" myself in this
Fun Day cartoon a few years ago. I'm still deeply embarrassed!
Seeing
this van (Photo by
Howard
Sheard) demonstrates quite nicely why
Just Green
might have cancelled their advertising on this website last month? That
JSTGREEN vanity plate surely cost a lot more than a year of advertising on
this home page? Lamma might have become too small for this booming business
expanding HK-wide?
This JSTGREEN van is a recent addition to those minibuses with wrap-around
Just Green advertising, seen on HK Island.
Just Green is actually a great and inspiring Lamma success story, starting
with that single, tiny, mostly customer-free shop beyond the Bookworm Cafe 5
years ago, growing into an "Organic Empire" (their actual co. name) with its
own HK-wide fleet of delivery vans w/vanity plates!
Here
are some Lamma-zine stories about their early, modest Lamma days:
Jan 31, 2010:
Super-Foods from the LifeForceMan
Aug 25, 2011:
Just Green Lamma Soap
One of the founders has left Lamma a while back (see Helen the Just
Greenie in their Soho store - with Moosa who's been
interviewed again on TV recently). Just Green has turned into a chain of profitable organic supermarkets with often
eye-watering prices, joining Moosa's Life Cafe and other organic
ventures HK-wide for the "green", well-off consumer, incl. a thriving
Discovery Bay
store. Is this Lamma's ONLY chain store so far? Perhaps.
Just
Green is probably the most visible and obvious marker of how YSW is changing
from a Chin. fishing village into a Central suburb, full of recently
moved-in, affluent consumers who like to shop up-market and
health-conscious, while many of us less well-off Lammaites are being driven
out of the Greater YSW area by massive rent increases, having to move to
cheaper, more remote areas, like South Lamma, or even off the island
altogether.
But Just Green has really great bread and snacks, plus a great "living room"
with couches and even a seaside terrace for sunset drinks! The
Lamma Philosophy Cafe
was started there and is still going strong about once per month.
I'm wishing all the very best to this former top advertiser, thanking them
warmly to help this website to survive. Let's hope that the "Organic Empire"
might return to us someday, remembering their early, modest roots on our
little, "just green" island. ;=}
